THE PROPOSAL!!! And what you should spend your money on during the Sephora sale
Friends! Before I get to a whole big list of makeup and skincare recs, I have all sorts of fun news about The Proposal! It came out on Tuesday, and I had a bundle of great events in Austin, Houston, Oakland and San Francisco, and I have more fun events coming up. Los Angeles, I can't wait to chat with all of you tomorrow, Saturday November 3rd, at 5pm at The Ripped Bodice; I'll be in conversation with Maureen Lenker of Entertainment Weekly! And then next week I head to the East Coast, starting with an event at Politics and Prose at the Wharf on Thursday, November 8th where I'll be in conversation with Petra Mayer of NPR, and then I head to Boston for an event with Harvard Bookstore at the Oberon Theater, where I'll be in conversation with Roxane Gay (this is the only ticketed event, so click on that link to get your tickets). My final East Coast stop is in Brooklyn, New York, at Books Are Magic, where I'll be in conversation with Ashley Ford. I hope to see lots of you in the next few weeks!
In between some of those events is Election Day -- I got my absentee ballot a few weeks ago, and I'm going to sit down later today to figure everything out so I can drop it off at the polls on Election Day. Vote if you can, and if you can't, see if you can help get people to the polls on that day.
Also, there were some fun articles about The Proposal this week that you may have missed. I had a wonderful time talking to Hannah Giorgis of The Atlantic about consent and writing romance and why I love romance so much. I wrote this piece for Popula about how The Proposal ended up being a very different book than when I'd initially conceived of it. And I did this fun interview with Marie Claire, which picked The Proposal for its book club in November!
I have no book recs or recipes for you this week, because with travel, a book coming out, and another book I'm working on, I haven't cooked in weeks, and my reading has mostly been comfort rereads.
OKAY, to the Sephora recs. The beauty insider sale is on this weekend, which is the time to splurge on some pricey things, or buy presents, or just stock up on stuff you like or have been wanting to try. Let's start with lipsticks. Some of my favorites are: YSL lip stain in 1, Fenty Stunna in Uncensored, Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 01, and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. And this is a real splurge, but look, all of the Pat McGrath lipsticks are amazing. I also love (and just repurchased) the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for dry lips. Then we have face: I love the Kevin Aucoin blushes (though they break really easily, so handle with care), the Becca/Chrissy Teigen palette, and this Josie Maran highlighter (someone asked me what highlighter I wore at one of my events this week, I don't remember which day it was, but it was likely some combination of 2 of those). And then skin: look, I know they're both wildly expensive, but I love Good Genes and Drunk Elephant's Baby Facial a bunch, but for a much cheaper treat, I also love the Dr. Jart sheet masks, especially the Vital Hydra Solution. And the Origins Drink Up overnight mask is a great heavy duty moisturizer for dry winter nights (or plane flights).
Let me know if you try any of that stuff and like it!
Have a great weekend, and I hope to see some of you in the next few weeks!
