Look for the helpers
I have a confession to make: I haven't read or watched anything about the Mr. Rogers movie. Not because I didn't love Mr. Rogers, I really did. But because I don't know if I could take it right now. He was, at core, a kind, giving, and thoughtful man and just thinking about him, in the midst of America's living nightmare of a government, mades me so sad right now. But maybe I need to watch it to give me some hope, I think if anyone could give me that right now, it might be him. Especially since this week, as we learn more and more about the children and parents who are being torn apart at the border, I and so many others have been trying to figure out how to help. If you want to know who to give money to for this, here's a list of places I've seen and have been recommended by friends I trust who are helping right now:
This Amazon wishlist, shared by an ACLU attorney on Twitter, helping children in Texas.
Neta, taking donations for families sleeping outside.
LUPE, working along the Rio Grande Valley.
The Texas Civil Rights Project.
RAICES, legal services for separated parents and direct funding for bonds to get them released.
KIND, helping children in immigration courts.
The Florence Project, providing free legal services to immigrants along the Arizona border.
Border Angels, who advocates for immigrants rights, and brings water to migrant crossing routes.
And please please call your Senators and congress members. You can reach your Senator at 202-224-3121 and your congress member at 202-225-3121, or go to this website and plug in your address and it'll give you all of their office numbers.
Back to the usual book recs and recipes next week. Have a good weekend. Pet a dog or hug a baby, I'm hoping to get to do both.
